Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast - Episode Sexology Changed Everything: or, Why the LHMP Ends Around - transcript

(Originally aired /07/20 - listen here)

Introduction

The Female homosexual Historic Motif Venture has a fairly expansive scope, covering not only women-loving-women throughout history, but also themes and motifs that can be useful when writing lesbian or sapphic characters, such as gender-crossing (which is nearly unworkable to separate out) and singlewomen (because they speak to the possibilities for women who don’t marry for whatever reason). There are some topics where my coverage is limited due to logistical reasons, such as non-Western cultures, where research may not have been done yet or may not be accessible to me for language reasons. But the one area where I have deliberately limited the scope is in cutting off coverage around the beginning of the 20th century.

There are two reasons for that. Partly, it’s to keep the Project manageable. There is so much more information on lesbian history present after that it would swamp the coverage of earlier cen

I’ve heard of personal shoppers to the stars… but porn stars?

I received a message out of the blue from a mate who had recently embarked on a new venture, making and sharing individual content for the paying public on OnlyFans.

ARE YOU FREE TOMORROW? I COULD DO WITH PICKING YOUR SMART BRAINS.

SURE, I replied, BUT DEY AIN’T DAT SMART. D’UH.

CAN I Choose YOUR NOT SO Bright BRAINS THEN?

Intrigued, I sent back, YOU DON’T Wish ME TO APPEAR IN ONE OF YOUR VIDEOS, DO YOU?!

He assured me that wasn’t the case.

We arranged to meet the following afternoon on Hurst Street.

He was delayed, so I enjoyed a pleasant hour sat outside Missing, watching scorching guys coming and going from the gym and being entertained by daft banter from the next table.

My table neighbours were particularly impressed by a member of bar staff, whom effortlessly cleared copious empty glasses in a single go.

One asked, “Do you have seven fingers on each hand?”

“Of course she doesn’t,” his mate scoffed, “she’s not from Tamworth.”

When my friend turned up,

I feel like I never see the term “Queer” used pejoratively anymore, and only ever used in a positive context, which is nice. I think we’re taking it back.

I have a bit of an internet presence, which make it look like I am a fancy person; The truth is that I’m not. Being a freelancer and doing live events, I am almost always active. What this means is that almost every day I am wearing some variation on cargo pants, big combat boots to give me a precious not many inches because I’m four foot ten, and a black T-shirt of tank top. It used to be that in lofty school and college I only wore mens clothing so that I could be perceived as tough, but as time has gone on, I mix it up and let myself be cute.

Up until I was fourteen or fifteen I was never really attracted to anyone, and didn’t get why anyone would want to be with someone like that, and then… I never really had a moment, I just always sort of thought that both guys and girls were cute,

My current boyfriend is a country young man, he grew up two hours north of where I grew up. I met him at a lesbian bar in Newcastle. He was one of the two other men in the bar, my brother was the other. My brother’s wife was 8½ months pregnant and she wanted to proceed somewhere where she would feel comfortable. So we were out at a lesbian bar dancing up a storm. I was dancing with my brother when I looked across the bar and saw this man and mind ‘God, you’re gorgeous!’ So I marched up and offered to buy him a drink, he said no. However, it turned out that the people he was there with were also people I knew so we ended up on the identical table together. We started chatting and quickly established that the other bloke in the room was my brother, the pregnant lady was his wife and we weren’t having some kind of strange three-way relationship. So after establishing I was free, we went somewhere for a quiet drink before he went back to Tamworth.

We stayed in feel on th
