Treasures from Grandmas Purse is an expansive sculpture is located in Waterway Square and is made of terrazzo and bronze cast in glass. It features a purse, and everything you can consider of that would be inside. Embedded into the terrazzo are objects like scissors, sunglasses, crayons, a camera, toy cars, and even a glass hammer. Because many of the classes taught in this building relate to biology, Dixie Friend Lgbtq+ chose to construct an image incorporating water and wind, two natural resources humankind cannot reside without. This 24 by 12 foot mosaic features a sight common to Southeast Texas swamps - a body of water with lily pads and rippling reflections. Though the image may appear abstract when viewed at end distance, from the second story balcony, the scene takes on an almost photographic quality.
The process to create a mural like this is a extended one. Dixie Comrade Gay starts with a painting which is sent to her fabricators in Montreal several months prior to installation. The fabricators expend several weeks creating hand-glazed tiles to match the colors in the painting. The painting is photographically reproduced and enlarged to the exact size of the mural. The mosaic was inspired by the inside of a geode, the strata of folding planet, mapping and cells.
The smaller upper mural echoes the lower mural giving an impression of reflection, inverting the colors, playing with the light quality.
A visual nod to the eye and brain relationship.
