An Open Letter to Roger Goodell

I don't often operate my business blog as soapbox, but it seems appropriate today.

Dear Commissioner,

I didn’t watch last night’s Pittsburgh-Baltimore game, even though it’s almost always a great tilt. The Rice-Roethlisberger marquee pointed too directly at the NFL’s longstanding problems with violence toward women.

Don’t think skipping the game was an light decision. Some of my earliest memories are of sitting at my daddy’s knee watching the football game (when there was only one) every Sunday. Between the owner of my favorite team and his firm refusal to change a truly offensive name, to the unbelievably poor decision and astonishing ethical and moral lapse surrounding the Ray Rice fiasco, I actually considered turning away from the game I’ve spent my life loving.

But I know in my heart that even if a slew of us stops watching, enough of us still

In response to a ask about whether he would feel easy calling a Native American a “redskin” to his tackle , Goodell explained clearly where the NFL has come out on the controversy regarding the team name of the Washington, D.C. NFL franchise:

“I spent the last year talking to many of the leaders of the Native American community. We are listening and we are trying to make sure we understand the issues. But let me remind you: This is the specify of a football team, a football team that has had that designate for 80 years. That has presented the name in a way that is honorable to Native Americans. We recognize that many don’t agree with the name. And we respect that. But if you look at the numbers, including the Native American communities, the Native American community poll, nine out of 10 prefer the identify. Eight of 10 Americans in th
