LGBT Travel Guide: Newport, Rhode Island

Rhode Island may not be the first place to come to the top of your consciousness when you think of LGBT travel destinations. But it should be because Newport, Rhode Island has everything you could ever want in an LGBT Commute Destination.

Lively nightlife, CHECK.

Hits all the boxes on everything you would need in a explore destination and Newport boasts itself on being a place that takes pride in being LGBT friendly. Which is why I wanted to put together an LGBT Travel Guide for this hometown gem, Newport, Rhode Island.

Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk is probably one of Newport&#;s most legendary tourist attraction but it&#;s light to see why. The Rhode Island coastline is already a stunner, to begin with. Combine that with a scenic mile walkway that borders the support lawn of The Breakers and many other Newport mansions and you&#;re in for a gorgeous walk with your significant other.

With no gay block or space to call its control, Newport's LGBTQ group feels 'isolated'

NEWPORT — Even before the COVID pandemic, Daniel Cano-Restrepo said the LGBTQ community in the city had felt estranged.

“There is a community out there, it’s just somehow disconnected,” Cano-Restrepo said. “A gay block or an LGBT establishment, of course there is a need for that, and the group will respond to that place.”

Cano-Restrepo and his partner, Sean O’Connor, run NewportOUT, a website assigned to marketing Newport as a tourism destination to LGBTQ travelers. Although several bars host events for the people, the two said the area still needs a vacuum to socialize and express themselves.

“It would certainly be a huge asset for the community, not only locally, but for, you understand, that travel tourism aspect of things,” O’Connor said.

Several homosexual bars have opened and closed in the city, but there has not been one in operation since The last one, Castaways, was open for just two years at the former location of the city’s longest-running gay lock, David’s, which had closed years before

Gay Bars in Newport: Accomplish We Need One?

Let’s talk gay bars in Newport, Rhode Island.

To startthere are none! But that definitely has not always been the case. So in this blog we want to chat about the history of gay bars in Newport and possibilities for the future.

At NewportOUT, part of what we undertake is producing events to serve as gatherings for our LGBTQ+ community - in bars, at parks, at the beach, and sometimes on boats! But as a small company, we can only perform so much.

We can tell you that people write us regularly asking about the LGBTQ+ nightlife in Newport. Sometimes they are people planning a visit (or a move) who haven’t spent much time here. Other times it’s from people who have come here many times before and fondly remember the queer establishments in the past that they could count on for some community and fun.

A anecdote from last year to illustrate: In the fall of , we partnered with the Top of Pelham for a NewportOUT evening at the dueling piano bar. One of our favorite dueling piano players, Davina, was scheduled to perform. We hung a bi
